59th Maba/Matrix Agong Cup National Basketball Championship 2017

The 59th MABA/Matrix Agong Cup National Basketball Championship ended with a high note where the Negeri Sembilan team defended their men’s title against the high-spirited Malacca. Negeri Sembilan, who was at 27-35 after the first quarter, rallied after a break with point guard Teo Kok Hou pulling the strings, resulting in a 78-64 win at the House of Champions in Gem In Mall, Cyberjaya. In the women’s event, the Kuala Lumpur team claimed the crown by edging the previous defending champion, Selangor with 59-57 points in the finals.
The Agong Cup has seen so many first of the firsts, as well as a soaring interest in basketball. It was proven from the daily crowds filling up the House of Champions, plus the newly-added non-Chinese MABA Selection Team which landed the Division Two title and further beaten Selangor to earn the promotion to Division One.
Other notable and worthy observations from the event were:
  • Negeri Sembilan had more depth off the bench:the team made the most rotations with the bench players.
  • Teo Kok Hou showed his worth: the 23-year old named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the finals for his stellar performance!
  • Selangor missed Chong Yin Yin: the feisty lady known as the best defensive player out to nurse an injury.
